Options Under the Hood

In 2024, Ford updated the styling and powertrain options, and they continue into 2025. The base engine in the XL, STX, and XLT trims is a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Drivers who want more power can choose a bigger twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. This engine is available in the XL, XLT, Tremor, and Lariat trims but is standard in the posh King Ranch and Platinum trims.

The PowerBoost 3.5-liter V6 is a mild-hybrid engine tuned for 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque and is available in several well-equipped trims. For even more horsepower, the Raptor has the same engine tuned with high output for 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.

Ford also offers a V8 engine in several trims. Drivers craving a full-size pickup with raw power can choose the Raptor R with a supercharged 5.2-liter high-output V8. This powerful beast has 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque

A more mild V8 is standard in the Tremor and Lariat. The 5.0-liter V8 with 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque is also available in the entry-level trims.

All models have standard rear-wheel drive, while four-wheel drive is available on several trims. Ford pairs every engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Top Towing in the Ford F-150 Lineup

If you are purchasing a Ford F-150 for towing, the best engine for the job is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The standard EcoBoost engine can tow up to 13,500 pounds with properly equipped. It can also carry up to 2,440 pounds of payload.

The next most powerful towing engine is the V8 in the Tremor and Lariat. This engine tows up to 12,900 pounds. The PowerBoost engine can tow up to 11,200 pounds. If you don’t plan on towing often but want the option, all models can tow up to 8,200 pounds.

The all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning can tow between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds, depending on the battery and electric motor configurations.
